NURSE MANAGER (PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES)

This position is responsible for management of clinical practices and patient care delivery.  Role functions include management of resources – staff, fiscal, materials, and support systems.

Assumes 24-hour responsibility and accountability for department operations and delivery of patient care in designated areas.
Plans, implements and evaluates an Operating Room Plan for Nursing Care that supports the goals and objectives of the Perioperative Department, Nursing Division and hospital to include, but not limited to the following:
·         Mission, vision, goals, objectives for the unit;

·         Standard operating unit procedures;

·         Clinical practice guidelines;

·         Specific staffing plan for the OR and Endoscopy;

·         Required competencies for unit staff; and

·         Continuous quality performance unit activities. Collaborates with physicians and all members of the healthcare team in planning for the delivery of patient care and the achievement of desirable patient care outcomes. Prepares, monitors, and controls the unit(s’) operating budget.  

Determines workload and provides adequate levels of staff to ensure safe and effective nursing care.

 Develops, publishes, and monitors staffing schedules, and determines and makes daily adjustments as indicated by patient care needs of the unit.

Determines patient, family, nurse and physician satisfaction with care; maintains methods that meet the needs, wants, and expectations of the patients, staff, and physicians; and designs systems for improvement when indicated.

Provides for unit-level orientation, training, and development of all unit staff to ensure that staff are competent to perform job duties and responsibilities.

Maintains unit compliance with Joint Commission, DHRA, local and federal regulatory standards.

Assumes the availability of support services, supplies, and equipment to facilitate patient care.

Assures the use of the nursing process (Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) in documentation of nursing care delivered to patients on the assigned unit(s).

Conducts monthly staff meetings and maintains minutes of proceedings.

Conducts ongoing assessments of individual staff performance and completes performance appraisals
according to agency guidelines.

Conducts interviews, recommends for hire, implements a progressive disciplinary process, and recommends terminations as indicated.

Serves as a resource person for subordinates and peers; assists staff in identifying patient care needs or problems and their personal/professional needs and in utilizing effective problem-solving skills.

Responsible for decision-making and accountability for nursing judgments made for the unit, including investigation of problems, complaints and other significant events that occur to include patient and staff incidents and environmental issues/irregularities.

Participates in developing, communicating and interpreting the philosophy and goals of the department.  Directs and participates in unit orientation activities.

Conducts staff meetings and submits reports as required.

Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct. Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training. Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements. Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities. Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures. Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.  The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive. A Masters Degree in nursing or related field preferred.  In lieu of a Master’s Degree in nursing, ten (10) years hospital clinical practice experience and five (5) years management experience required. Minimum of ten (10) years experience in nursing in, including at least five (5) years in a position of Charge Nurse or comparable leadership position.  Five (5) years’ documented experience as a professional nurse, providing direct patient care in an acute care Operating Room. Current license to practice nursing in the District of Columbia.
Recent management and/or Charge nurse experience in an acute care Operating Room.
 Current clinical competence in Operating Room Nursing. CNOR preferred. Must be able to stand, walk, lift up to 25 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, pull, push, reach, handle, write, type, file, speak, hear, see, calculate, compare, edit, evaluate, interpret, and organize for extended periods of time.
