BASIC FUNCTION:

The Director takes responsibility and accountability for nursing care in the areas of responsibility. The care of patients continues as they move through the areas of responsibility and into the home or other level of care in the community. Patient care may be provided to patients in all age categories based on assigned area of responsibility. The purpose of this position is to plan and direct the daily administration and management of nursing services within the assigned department.

DIMENSIONS:

Reporting directly to this position are: Nurse Managers, Clinical Nurses, Licensed Practical
Nurses, Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Nursing Assistants arid Administrative Assistants.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Interacts internally with hospital management, physicians, patients, family members and staff in providing patient care to all age groups.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Consistently demonstrates support of the mission, philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Division and Hospital.

Participates as a key member of the Patient Care Services leadership team, chairs committees and actively participates on Nursing and hospital committees


Through department managers/staff, directs and manages the delivery of nursing services and safe patient care which are integrated with business plans and meet or exceed cost, quality, clinical and utilization standards and performance measures.

Ensures that services meet members, physician and internal client needs in a changing, competitive health

care market.

Accountable for the efficient delivery of patient care and support services within the service line for KP members by directing the development, evaluation and utilization of safe, cost effective, high quality nursing practices.

In collaboration with Senior Leadership/designee and Medical Director develops strategic/business plans to achieve integrated services across the continuum of care with departments/service line.

Directs and ensures continuous quality and safety of staff and patients and improvement of all clinical practices, services and operations by managing the design and implementation of systems, processes and methods to evaluate and improve safe patient care across the continuum.

Plans, develops and/or directs the implementation of service area initiatives within the service line shares best practices and standards of care.
- Directs and/or delegates the appropriate delivery and level of services.
- Directs budget management and resource allocation.
- Manages financial performance and identifies and implements strategies to reduce costs and improve quality and safety of care and service.
- Manages and resolves human resource, labor relations, employee and department safety and risk management issues.
- Coaches, Hires, fires and disciplines as part of performance management.
- Directs compliance with administrative, legal and regulatory requirements of governmental and regulatory agencies.

Develops, implements, monitor systems that facilitate individualized nursing care that is of high quality to all.

Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.

Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.

Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.

Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.

Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.

Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Five (5) years director level experience in but not limited to a high risk recent Women’s Services, Labor and Delivery, NICU unit including Postpartum and Outpatient services.  

Minimum of Four (4) years progressive management experience in Women’s Services/Perinatal areas.

Current D.C. Registered Nurse License.  Current BLS, NRP. MS preferred. Clinical certifications in clinical area preferred. Previous management experience required.

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (12-25lbs), kneel, bend, pull, push, reach, write, type, speak, hear, see (color vision), calculate, compare, edit, evaluate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.
